Toyota has now unveiled the new 2025 4Runner, the latest version of its iconic adventure-ready 4x4 SUV. After having been on the market relatively unchanged for longer than almost every other SUV in Canada, the 4Runner enters an entirely new generation that promises to take it to new heights. Here are the main things to know about it.

A new take on an icon’s design

The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner features an entirely new design that is unquestionably new, while staying true to its predecessor. This means that the new model benefits from a bold appearance that blends ruggedness with refinement, making the 4Runner look at ease on the trail and in the city. Up front, the new 4Runner features a large grille and a prominent bumper with a silver protection plate on most versions. From the side, the new model shows its similarity with the Tacoma thanks to its dynamic body sculpting and its wide wheel arches. In a nod to the first 4Runner, the new model is equipped with wrap-over rear quarter windows that reach up to the roof. Another distinctive feature that was kept from previous generations is the roll-down rear window, something owners have always appreciated.

A Thoroughly Modern Interior

The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner introduces a completely modern interior that benefits from all of the latest technologies, such as the Toyota Multimedia infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is housed in a large 14-inch touchscreen in most models, and an 8-inch unit as standard. The 4Runner also benefits from an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that puts all of the most important information right in front of the driver. Of course, the new 4Runner also benefits from the latest in terms of driver assistance technologies, many of which are included in the standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of features.

The same rugged capabilities as before

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner continues to be one of the most capable vehicles in its category since unlike many other SUVs, it still features a high-strength boxed ladder frame, which is shared with the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, and the upcoming Land Cruiser. In addition, the 4Runner is offered in three adventure-focussed trim levels: the popular TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro, along with the new Trailhunter version. These models can now be equipped with a stabilizer bar disconnect function that allows the suspension to move more freely over obstacles at the touch of a button. Available surround-view cameras are also designed to help the driver see around the vehicle to pick the best path without having to get out of their seat. The new Trailhunter trim level acts as a factory built overlanding rig since Toyota has partnered with popular external suppliers to give this model items such as Old Man Emu forged shocks with external reservoirs, RIGID LED fog lamps, a unique ARB roof rack, and 33-inch Toyo All-Terrain tires.

Two powerful and efficient engines

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner gains two very modern powertrains that will help it be more capable and more efficient than its predecessor. The standard engine is the i-FORCE turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder that delivers 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, or 8 horsepower and 39 lb-ft of torque more than the previous V6. The other engine choice in the new 4Runner is the impressive i-FORCE MAX hybrid system, which uses the same engine but adds a 48-horsepower electric motor for a boost of output, which reaches 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful drivetrain ever installed in a production 4Runner. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The New Platinum Trim Level

In addition to the Trailhunter version, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner also adds a luxurious Platinum trim level that offers more luxury than the Limited, which was previously the range-topper. This new model comes with unique elements such as black exterior accents, heated rear seats, a standard tow-tech package, a head-up display, and rain-sensing wipers. With this new model, the 4Runner can now attract a wider range of buyers since it has something to offer for everyone, from those looking for a basic but capable large SUV to those wanting the ultimate in terms of off-roading comfort and durability, and now, even those who want a luxury SUV that isn’t afraid of venturing off of paved roads.
